Nelly Lahoud, Qaradawi on Jihad this is the first of a three parter available on jihadica.com "Youssef al-Qaradawi’s recent book Fiqh al-Jihad (Jurisprudential Reasoning and Jihad), excerpts of which are available here, has received considerable attention in the Arabic press and for good reason. Al-Qaradawi commands significant influence among Sunni Muslims in the Arab world and beyond, not least because he reaches a wider audience through his television shows on al-Jazeera (”Huda al-Islam” and “al-Shari‘a wa-al-Hayat”) and his two websites, one dedicated to his work, the other, Islamonline, designed to serve as a news service about the Muslim world, a religious guide to Muslims and a window to the Islamic faith and civilization to non-Muslims."

Hajj hotel
Riazat Butt, Guardian, Mecca super-hotel to offer spa, butler and a chocolate room, 15 Oct 09 "Raffles, which gave thirsty wanderers the Singapore Sling, is opening a luxury hotel in Mecca offering pilgrims a coffee sommelier, a chocolate room where chefs will prepare bespoke pralines and truffles, and a 24-hour butler service.
"Undeterred by restrictions on beautifying oneself during the Hajj, the hotel will also have segregated gyms, beauty parlours, grooming salons and a spa."
Non-tech, but interesting story. There's an artist's impression of the new hotel. Not sure if it is subject to planning permission (the hotel seems to overshadow the precincts of Mecca), nor is it clear how its luxurious facilities are justified on other religious grounds.

Istiqlal Media
Adam Rawnsley, wired.com, Taliban Steps Boldly in 2007, Invades YouTube, 13 Oct 09 discusses Istiqlal Media:
"The Taliban’s experiment with an official YouTube channel, however, might not be as effective at keeping the group’s propaganda online. While controversies have erupted over YouTube’s efforts to remove terrorist videos before, many such videos are frequently taken down. An official Taliban channel could be a lightning rod, making it easier to identify, report and remove the outfit’s videos and potentially placing Afghanistan’s militant Mullahs in another bandwidth crunch sooner than they think."

The True Furqan is “…is a book written by two Christian Arabs, calling themselves Al Saffee and Al Mahdee, and translated by Dr Anis Shorrosh who calls it ‘a tool to evangelize Muslims’. It consists of about 77 chapters. The book seems to be an amalgam of different versions of Bible and the Holy Quran. Most of the Arabic text has been copied from the Holy Quran by modifying many of its verses.” This FB group is for Muslims and others opposed to The True Furqan."
Interesting opinions on this issue, in relation to knee-jerk reactions or calls for censorship. "The True Furqan" [sic] reminds me of the "SuraLikeIt" debate, which I discussed way back in Virtually Islamic.

'American Qur'an'
AP, 'American Qur'an' blends US life, Quranic verses, 7 Oct 09 "In Birk's version, each chapter of the Quran has been carefully copied in English in a calligraphy modeled on the urban graffiti of America's inner cities. The stark black text is bordered by scenes from American life both mundane and extraordinary: gangsters flashing signs, Hurricane Katrina's devastation, migrants working the fields, a crowded airport lounge and a raging California wildfire among them."
This has raised a number of potentially controversial issues relating to text and depiction of the Qur'an.
"Even when completed, Birk’s “American Qur’an” is not to be considered a “Holy Qur’an” in that it does not contain the original text in Arabic. Tradition holds that since the Qur’an was revealed to Muhammad in Arabic, that only the Arabic text – or a translation that also contains the original Arabic verses – may truly be considered as the “Holy Qur’an”. Translations into any other language are not “true” Qur’ans, but merely approximations of God’s revelations." Source: koplindelrio.com

BBC News, One in four is Muslim, study says, 8 Oct 09 "A report from an American think-tank has estimated 1.57 billion Muslims populate the world - with 60% in Asia."
Details: pewforum.org, Mapping the Global Muslim Population, A Report on the Size and Distribution of the World's Muslim Population [executive summary] "A comprehensive demographic study of more than 200 countries finds that there are 1.57 billion Muslims of all ages living in the world today, representing 23% of an estimated 2009 world population of 6.8 billion.
"While Muslims are found on all five inhabited continents, more than 60% of the global Muslim population is in Asia and about 20% is in the Middle East and North Africa. However, the Middle East-North Africa region has the highest percentage of Muslim-majority countries. Indeed, more than half of the 20 countries and territories1 in that region have populations that are approximately 95% Muslim or greater."
The weighted map is useful in showing population distribution.

Indeed, more than half of the 20 countries and territories1 in that region have populations that are approximately 95% Muslim or greater."
The weighted map is useful in showing population distribution.

bloomberg.com, Al-Qaeda Declares Holy War on China Over Oppression of Uighurs, 8 Oct 09 "A leading al-Qaeda theologian and possible successor to Osama bin Laden called for a holy war against China, which he accused of “Satanic” oppression of Muslims in the westernmost province of Xinjiang.
"“The state of atheism is heading to its fall,” Abu Yahya al-Libi said in a video posted on an unspecified Islamic Web site, Reuters reported yesterday. China has carried out massacres of Muslim ethnic Uighurs in Xinjiang and pursued policies aimed at “their demise and destruction” while “looting their wealth and undermining their culture and religion,” Reuters citing him saying."

'Commercial break'
The whole issue of how websites promote themselves is an intriguing one, especially in relation to elements of cyber Islamic environments. For some time now (including in iMuslims, I've been writing about the phenomena of online matrimonial agencies, so thought I would drop this press release into the blog. It links to three humorous (depending on your definition) tv ads from SingleMuslim.com (also on YouTube), and they've been using an image from their campaign for online advertising elsewhere. They obviously had fun with the make-up. See:
SingleMuslim.com, SingleMuslim.com TV Adverts Launched
Other products are available. I'd be interested in seeing examples of humorous adverts of this nature elsewhere.

Jordan, technology and comedy
A couple of interesting tech related stories relating to Jordan:

Tom Gara, The National, Arabic humour scores a hit, 26 Sep 09 "A Jordanian website that lets users view and share humorous Arabic-language content is one of the winners of a contest to find the most promising internet startups in Europe and the Middle East." This refers to Talasim:

"Love Jihad: luring girls online and forcing them to convert to Islam"
asianews.it, Love Jihad: luring girls online and forcing them to convert to Islam, 6 Oct 09 "The High Court of Kerala asks the state police and the Interior Minister in New Delhi to investigate the forced conversion campaign dubbed "Love Jihad" and "Romeo Jihad." Young people attracted by promises of marriage end up in the hands of Islamic organizations. It is feared that there are over 4 thousand cases. For the boys who act as bait there is a reward of 100 thousand rupees ...
" ... The main instrument used for grooming is the Internet. The profile of young people involved is well defined: Hindu or Christian, a student in college or their first job, coming from wealthy families. The primers were precise: two weeks to verify the feasibility of converting the girl, six months for submission to real brainwashing. During their mission the young men are given cell phones, bikes and clothing needed to lure young women; if the conversion occurred 100 thousand rupees, about 1,400 Euros, as financial aid to start a business of their own."
Sensationalistic story - expect to see this in the tabloids.

Report: ICT in Sub-Saharan Africa
Open Net Initiative, Internet filtering in Sub-Saharan Africa "Many sub-Saharan African governments view the Internet as a key tool for development and are developing ICT policies accordingly, though the region still lags behind the rest of the world in both number and percentage of Internet users. Sub-Saharan Africa has a history of media abuses and restrictions on freedom of the press, and the region would seem a likely setting for equally restrictive Internet policies. However, ONI testing found evidence of a technical filtering regime in only one country, Ethiopia. As the Internet continues to develop in sub-Saharan Africa, so too will laws regulating its use. To what extent these laws will encourage education, commerce and online governance or restrict free expression largely remains to be seen."
The report clearly has significant implications in its discussions on a variety of Muslim contexts, although I haven't read it yet.

sharia.com
pressreleasenetwork.com, New Sharia.com launched to help Poor Muslims "Every year millions of Muslims are falling in to the poverty trap, despite the wealthy people of the world consuming excessive amounts of food, energy and natural resources of the world.
"Sharia.com allows poor Muslims from around the world as well as other poor communities to list and display their products and services for sale, for free. Buyers from the local area as well as worldwide are encouraged to trade with the poor, so they can earn an income and get out of poverty with dignity and pride. Aid and Charity to date have largely failed poor Muslims around the world."
"“In the last few decades the situation of the poor Muslims worldwide has become very desperate. Sharia.com is our effort to address this situation. In a world of plenty and excess consumption by the wealthy, abject poverty is a “crime against humanity”, states Shafique Azam who is the idea’s man behind Sharia.com. He is the Founder of TheDesert.com which was the first business to business web portal launched for the Middle East region in 1999. He is UK educated and former Middle East Regional Manager for British Telecom."

Swat Facebook video
Telegraph, Pakistan soldiers 'beat' civilians in Facebook video, 5 Oct 09 "The recording has emerged as concern rises over alleged extra-judicial killing of Taliban detainees in the country's Swat valley.
"The apparent executions and the film, posted on internet websites including YouTube and Facebook, could undermine the Pakistani army's operation in north western Swat to drive out the Taliban who had annexed the area – an offensive which has won praise from around the world."
Declan Walsh, Guardian, Video shows Pakistani soldiers beating Taliban suspects, 2 Oct 09
The latter article includes a link to heavily edited version of the 10 minute clip, somewhat incongruously edited by the Guardian onto a commercial for vodka ...
"The country's powerful army has faced frequent accusations of human rights abuses. Ali Dayan Hasan of Human Rights Watch said it was difficult to verify the authenticity of the video but such abuses were common whenever soldiers were involved in anti-terrorism operations. "It is disgustingly predictable," he said."

But the Internet that allowed him to spread hatred from the boondocks also proved his undoing, and yesterday -- largely on the strength of his online activity -- the 36-year-old Moroccan was convicted of four terrorism charges
" ... Hundreds of pages of transcribed conversations, retrieved from password-protected web sites and Namouh's computer, proved that he was an active member of the Global Islamic Media Front, a propaganda arm for al-Qaeda and smaller terrorist cells in Gaza and Somalia."

Zakir Naik
Hussain Zaidim Time, The Muslim Televangelist Linked to Zazi, 1 Oct 09
"You can see and hear him [Zakir Naik] in one of the countless alternate universes available on YouTube — listen to him cite chapter and verse of Koran and hadith with the greatest of ease, explicating their meaning to those who would live their lives right by God, conjuring up the world as it should be, explaining everything from the difficult truths of Islam to how long a beard a good Muslim should grow (grab the hair by a fist, and snip off all that protrudes below; and trim your mustache!). Through video and via his PEACE TV channel, which is beamed in 60 countries out of Mumbai and is said to have 50 million viewers, the Indian Muslim televangelist is a very real presence in the spiritual lives of millions of Muslims all over the world — including, it appears, Nazibullah Zazi, who was indicted last week for conspiracy to detonate weapons of mass destruction in New York City around the time of the eighth anniversary of al-Qaeda's Sept. 11 attack on the U.S."
