International State Crime Initiative

Melanie McFadyean, Times Higher Education, Research intelligence: Big Brother backlash, 10 June 2010 "Mention the study of state crime and people tend to ask what it entails. Put simply, it is a relatively new branch of criminology focusing on states as perpetrators of crime."

"Now its profile is set to be raised by Penny Green, head of research at King's College London's School of Law, and Tony Ward, reader in law at the University of Hull, who have set up the International State Crime Initiative (ISCI), a website with grand ambitions."

See statecrime.org for more info. on archives and resources.

The site was launched by Robert Fisk. Yusuf Sayman's film "You are Turkish" and the Sayman Photo Essay on Turkey & Iraq also featured in the launch.

Dua Khalil Aswad

Patrick Cockburn, Independent, The death sentence that drags Dua back into a bloody feud, 28 Apr 2010

"The Iraqi government's decision to reassert its authority by executing the men who stoned to death Dua Khalil Aswad threatens more sectarian bloodshed...

" ... Dua was accused of converting to Islam so she could marry the Sunni Muslim man she was in love with; the killing took place in public, in the town of Bashika, and a large crowd watched her die.

"But one thing marked Dua's death out: as she struggled against her tormentors, several members of the crowd took footage of the violence on mobile phones. The killing is the only one to have been filmed, and the circulation of a video online prompted a new rise in tensions between the Yazidis and Muslims in northern Iraq."

Germany

Earth Times, Kurd used internet to urge terrorists on: three years jail, 19 Jun 08 "In a case with major implications for the internet, a 37-year-old Kurdish father of four who used internet chatrooms to urge fellow Islamists to practice terrorism was jailed Thursday by a German court for three years. The immigrant's arrest in autumn 2006 in the poor German steel town of Georgsmarienhuette triggered worldwide speculation that police had arrested the chief of an incipient cell in al-Qaeda. The media invaded the town to interview his wife and neighbours.

"But the facts presented in court proved less dramatic and showed a man acting like millions of bloggers and chatroom denizens worldwide, typing out messages alone in their rooms while unwitting wives do the housekeeping and children play."

Asia Times, Internet myth mauls Turkish clothing firm, 14 Nov 07 "For about two weeks the Internet has been awash with unfounded rumors that LCW has been sold to Leyla Zana, the first Kurdish woman to take a seat in the Turkish Parliament. The result of the cyber-gossip has been a fourfold increase in visits to the LCW website; the number of visitors spiraled from 60,000 a month to 280,000 in five days. On the face of it that sounds like good news, but not if it is coupled with a 15% drop in sales revenue."
